It makes my day whenever I hear that someone has enjoyed and learned something from my book. It’s even more amazing when I hear that someone totally gets the whole purpose of the project. Thank you, Melissa, for the kind words you posted on Supertopo.com.
Hi, Sarah.
I bought your your book off the shelf in Lone Pine a couple of weeks ago and was going to write a little “check this out” post here about it.
I’m really enjoying it.
I’ve tried to learn about the geology of the places where I climb in the past and have found it a struggle. Most geology books are for aficionados and so full of jargon that I spend so much time in the glossary that I forget what was being said about this piece of vocab or that.
Your book gives relatively brief answers to climbing-relevant questions with plenty of eye candy for the wandering mind of a dilettante like me!
In addition to my curiosity about how the features that we use to climb formed, I bought your book as a little word tour of climbing rock. The pictures and rock descriptions are better than many topo books for getting a sense of what it might be like to climb some of these places.
Best of luck with book sales!

Check out the back of the Climbing 2009 Photo Annual issue for this great review of the book:
“Let’s face it—geology lessons typically run on the dry side. But climbers, of all people, should be curious about the stones on which we play. An engaging solution is found in Flakes, Jugs & Splitters: A Rock Climber’s Guide to Geology ($17.95, falcon.com), which answers pretty much everything about rocks—Why does Hueco have huecos? Why do the Needles have needles? How did Fontainebleau get its brain-like slopers?—but does so in a fun, easy-to-read Q&A format, with colorful photos and diagrams. High on the “Cool, I didn’t know that!” factor, the guide will give you a new eye for and a lasting appreciation of all stones, big and small. —KB”

The book is out! Woo-hoo! After many months of waiting, Flakes, Jugs & Splitters is out on the shelves, just waiting for you to pick up a copy. I’m working with the folks from The Globe Pequot to make sure it finds a home in your local outdoor shop and bookstore, but in the meantime, be sure to request it, or check it out online!

Rock climbers have an inherent interest in geology. For some, it’s about knowing what gear to use or how to avoid rotten bands of rock. For others, it’s about finding the next hot-spot boulder field, or understanding why a local crag exists. For most of them, curiosity about rocks comes as naturally as their desire to climb them. Geology is the fundamental control on the sport, and yet until now, there have been no practical guides for the climber interested in the science of rocks.
Flakes, Jugs, and Splitters fills this niche. With an informal Q&A format and fun, informative language, this user-friendly guide brings the often esoteric science of geology into the hands of rock climbers. Covering topics from how to use a geologic map and find new crags to why Europe has the best limestone and how El Capitan’s North America Wall got its name, it addresses a fact for every climber’s ponderings. Stunning photographs of worldwide destinations and easy-to-read artist’s renderings of geologic concepts make this essential new resource as visually engaging as it is entertaining and edifying.
